How to Import Multiple Tracks Into One Audacity Line

How to use Audacity with a microphone

The steps for recording audio from a microphone - whether you're using your computer's built-in mic or an external mic - are the same for Windows and Mac.

Open Audacity and familiarize yourself with the toolbar on the device, located below the play buttons. Here you can change theaudio host and recording devices and playback - essential conditions for recording in Audacity.

To start, create a new track by clicking on Tracks > Add> Stereo Track ou Mono Track.

Highlight any section with the cursor, then press the Delete key to delete any part of the recording on the fly. To delete everything you just saved, press Ctrl + A, then click Delete. You can also delete the track entirely by clicking the X button.

How to use Audacity to record from your Windows computer

Unlike Macs, Windows allows you to easily record audio from video or media file on your computer. There are three main ways to do this.

1. Use MME as an audio host

To choose MME as the audio host, first create a new track via Tracks > Add a new track > Stereo track.

1. Select MME as audio host (located to the left of recording device); this is the default, so you may not need to do this.
2. Open the drop-down list Recording Device and select Stereo mix. This option may have another name depending on your configuration, such as Wave out ou Loopback. Experiment if you are not sure.
3. Press Save, then play your audio source to capture it.

2. Use WASAPI as an audio host

WASAPI offers higher quality digital recordings. It should also be used when recording audio played from an external device.

With a new stereo track created, change audio host de MME default to Windows WASAPI.

How to use Audacity to record from your Mac?

There are two methods you can use to record audio from your Mac with Audacity. If one of them requires a loopback cable, the other requires you to download third-party software.

1. Use a loopback cable

Loopback cables are needed to record audio that is playing from your Mac, as there is no way to record streaming audio. Before you start, make sure you've muted all other sound on your computer. Alerts from incoming emails or instant messages will also be logged with this method.

Plug each end of the loopback cable into the input and output jacks. From there, open the Apple menu > System Preferences > Sound preferences.

Under Output, select Output, and under Starter, select Line input. With audio playing, adjust the input volume slider so that the input level slider lights all bars except the top three.

Then open Audacity. Choose Transport > Transport Options, then turn off Software Playthrough (click it so that the checkmark is not visible).

From the drop-down list for the recording device, choose Built-in Input. Tap Record, then start your audio.

2. Download third-party software

You can also use third-party software to capture the audio that is played on your Mac. If you don't feel like wiring a loopback cable (and reducing the quality of your recordings), try using iShowU Audio instead. Capture or Soundflower.

To start using iShowU Audio Capture, follow these steps:

1. Download iShowU Audio Capture.
2. Make sure to set your Mac's multiple output device to iShowU Audio Capture and Audacity's recording device to the same.

Soundflower requires additional configuration, but it takes the hassle out of recording most email alerts and other notifications. Here's how to use it:

1. Download Soundflower for OS X 10.9+ or OS X 10.6-10.8.
2. In your Mac's sound preferences, change the Output and Input to Soundflower (2ch).
3. Under Sound Effects, from the Play sound effects through drop-down menu, choose Line Out.
4. Open Audacity, and turn off Software Playthrough via Transport> Transport Options.
5. Change the recording device to Soundflower (2ch) and the playback device to Built-in output, and you're good to go.

Export and enjoy your Audacity recording

Once you have completed the registration, click File> Export in Audacity, and export to your preferred file type. If you plan to go back to your recorded tracks, don't forget to save the project as an .AUP file, too.

Using Audacity to record is that easy. You now have your first audio recording, ready to send, share, or edit in a podcast or video.
